Leave of Absence

In accordance with the Universities Act of 2002 students are permitted to apply for an official leave of absence for a maximum of two semesters, if the following reasons can be proven:  

- Military service, (evidence: conscription order), military training (evidence: army training confirmation) or compulsory community service (compulsory community service notification)  

- Prolonged illness (evidence: specialist medical confirmation) - Pregnancy (evidence: specialist medical confirmation)

- Caring for your own children (evidence: birth certificate) or for a sick relative

- Completion of a voluntary social year (evidence: confirmation of the welfare organisation).  

Furthermore,  leave of absence may also be granted for other important reasons relating to the student, such as  particular social or family reasons, work experience extra to the compulsory periods. Employment is not accepted as  a justification. The existence of these grounds must be demonstrated.

A leave of absence can be requested until the end of the extended period, i.e. 30th of June 2020.

The application for a leave of absence must be made by the 30th November at the latest (winter semester), and by the 30th April (summer semester) after the start of the  semester (postmark) for which the leave of absence is intended.

The approval for the leave of absence will be noted on the Record of Studies. During the leave of absence, the place on the course of studies will be maintained, attendance at lectures, taking and recognition of examinations, as well as the submission and assessment of scientific work is not permitted. Students who are on leave remain in their version  of the curriculum (A leave of absence does not extend the legally prescribed period during which studies must be completed according to "old curriculums"). Tuition fees do not need to be paid but the ÖH(Austrian national union of students)  contribution including the insurance contribution is payable.

Deviating from §67 UG, a leave of absence for the summer semester 2020 can be terminated on request by the student within the extended period (written request until the 30th of June 2020). The continuance of studies and participating in courses as well as taking exams will then be possible in the summer until the 30th of September 2020.

Students who claim study assistance, should make sure they are fully informed by the study assistance authorities before they make the application as students on a leave of absence do not have the right to study assistance.

    The Austrian Academy of Sciences has awarded Mag. Dr. Daniel Ehrmann, university assistant and doctoral candidate in the Department of German Studies, four year APART-Grant, which he will start on the1. 3. 2021.During this time he will complete his post doctoral thesis project „Aggregation. Relationaliity and the Constellations of Literature (1650 – 1950). Toward a medium range historical model.
    On the 05th March 2021 Univ. Prof. John W. C. Dunlop is holding a lecture on the topic of zum "Swarming Behaviour in Confinement - How curved surfaces influence pattern formation in biology." The lecture will take place at 14:00/ 2 pm online via Webex. The Department of Biological Sciences cordially invites you to attend.
    The project funding programme for research between PLUS and South East Asian partner universities, ASEA-UNINET Call 2021-2022 (Project implementation period: 1st October 2021 - 30th September 2022) is now open.
    Prof. Dr. Jude Lal Fernando, Assistant Professor at the Irish School of Ecumenics at Trinity College Dublin, will be holding lectures in SS 2021 on the topic of "Interreligious Relations in Asia" at the Centre for Intercultural Theology in the area of Religious Studies.
    The Project Application BioMat-TEM with the total volume of €1,948 million within the Framework of the Infrastructure funding from the Austrian Research Promotion Agenvy (FFG) has been approved.
    Six researchers from Europe and the USA were recently honored with the prestigious IFIP TC13 Pioneer Award for outstanding contributions on the topic of Human-Computer Interaction worldwide.Among them is the Head of HCI at the PLUS, Prof. Manfred Tscheligi.
