What will I learn?
Biology is regarded as the leading science of the 21st century, which considerably influences various areas of society. Biologists contribute to the sustainable management of a range of different global challenges, e.g., health and medicine, demographic change, the biodiversity crisis, climate change, as well as political discourse and legislation. The Bachelor's course in Biology at the University of Salzburg provides students with a profound understanding of the organisation and processes of life, from the level of molecules to organs and organ systems up to the level of populations, ecosystems and the principles of evolution. The course offers a profound education in the central subjects of biology and its methods, as well as in mathematics/statistics, chemistry and physics. In their last course year students can choose to specialize in one of the focus areas: molecular and cellular biology or ecology and evolution. This serves as a preparation for the postgraduate MA courses in Medical Biology, Ecology and Evolution or Molecular Biology (all taught in English).
Which career opportunities do I have?
With a solid and broad fundamental education, biologists can choose from a wide range of careers in private and public enterprises and institutions in the areas of healthcare, medicine and environment. Graduates are further qualified for occupations in the fields of research, development and distribution in health and medicine branches as well as in agriculture and forestry; biotechnology and environmental analysis; environmental protection and nature conservation; landscape planning and conservation; resource management; etc.
Why Salzburg?
In addition to the high-quality education, one of the benefits of the BSc course in Biology at the PLUS is the small size of groups, which allows for a more intensive supervision during internships.
