What will I learn?

The BSc degree course in Engineering is an interdisciplinary joint study offered by the University of Salzburg and the Technical University of Munich. Thus, it combines the disciplines of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences, and takes a closer look at the ties between competences from the fields of physics, chemistry, materials science and mechanical engineering. The aim of this degree course is to educate outstanding engineers skilled in scientific reasoning, who will be able to link research with development compartments/research with production compartments in various areas of the industry. Graduates have a profound knowledge of methods from several disciplines and are interdisciplinary in demand. On the job, they are able to utilize their comprehensive scientific competences to solve practical problems.

Which career opportunities do I have?

Graduates of the BSc degree course in Engineering are skilled to work in the following technical/scientific occupations: academic research and development, e.g., around the application of new engineering materials in the conversion of energy, in automotive engineering and lightweight construction, medical engineering and diagnostics. Further careers for engineering graduates can be found in industries in the fields of research, development, production, distribution and quality management (e.g., in the automobile industry and auto industry suppliers, machine engineering, etc.), administration (Offices of Weights and Measures, (Austrian) Standards Institute, TÜV, environmental authorities, etc.) and public services.

Why Salzburg?

The BSc degree course in Engineering is a joint study offered by the University of Salzburg in cooperation with the Technical University of Munich. This combination makes the course unique in Austria. Classic natural sciences (physics, chemistry, mathematics) are linked with machine engineering and an 8-weeks mandatory work placement in the industry, which allows students to establish contacts with the industry at an early stage of their studies. Students enjoy an excellent infrastructure at both locations. Graduates of this BSc course may enrol on an international postgraduate MSc degree course in Chemistry and Physics of Materials at the University of Salzburg, but they also qualify for the postgraduate courses at the Technical University of Munich.

How is the course structured?

The course starts in Salzburg, where students complete the first phase including mathematics and the basics in natural sciences. Following this, students change to Munich, where they will learn the methods of engineering in the subsequent two semesters at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). In their 7th semester, students complete their work placement at one of the two universities, as well as their Bachelor's thesis, which is to be written either at the University of Salzburg or the TU Munich.
