What will I learn?
In the MSc degree course in Psychology students gain advanced knowledge of the empirical research, description and explanation of human behaviour and experience under consideration of its biological and sociocultural base. Furthermore, students learn more about how to apply psychological knowledge for the creation of humane living and working conditions, and to deal professionally with mental disorders and psychosocial conditions of life. The MSc degree course at the University of Salzburg allows students to specialize in one of the following areas: Healthcare (Clinical Psychology, Health Psychology, Psychotherapy), Social Interaction (Social Psychology and Economic Psychology) and Cognitive Neuroscience (General Psychology, Biopsychology). However, students may also choose their own areas of specialization independently by combining optional modules.
Which career opportunities do I have?
Areas of application:
– Healthcare: Occupations in hospitals and medical health centres (with a focus on diagnosis and therapeutic intervention)
– Economy: industrial psychologist (with a focus on the organization of work), staff psychologist (with a focus on aptitude diagnosis and staff development) and organizational psychologist (with a focus on the support of change management processes in organizations), trainer, coach, management consultant, and in the field of market and opinion research (with a focus on the design and implementation of surveys, studies about purchasing behaviour, creating advertisements)
– Education: Occupations in the field of school psychology, advice on education and evaluation, on-the-job-training and further education
– Research: Research activities in psychological basics and fields of application as well as in the interdisciplinary context.
According to the Austrian law, an MSc degree in Psychology is a requirement for the autonomous occupation of a psychologist.
Why Salzburg?
The research achievements of the Department of Psychology at the University of Salzburg and its partner institutes are considerable in national, but above all also in international comparison. Therefore, the University of Salzburg has established cognitive neuroscience as one of three research emphases at the University: at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience (CCNS). This research emphasis studies the relations between behaviour and brain activity with all neurocognitive methods such as fMRI/MRI, EEG, TMS, eye tracking and a magnetoencephalographer (MEG), which has been the only operating device in Austria since 2016.
