What will I learn?
The MA course in Literary and Cultural Studies examines a variety of regional, national, and transnational literary and cultural phenomena from the integrated perspective of the theories and methods uniting all philologies. In a basic interdisciplinary module and in their field of specialization (English and American Studies, German Studies, Classical Philology, Comparative Literary Studies, Romance Studies or Slavonic Studies), students analyse and critically assess cultural processes in their historical genesis and evaluate their applicability for social practice.
Which career opportunities do I have?
The MA course prepares students for careers in public and private educational institutions, in the fields of media and culture work, and in academic research and teaching. Occupations for graduates include the promotion of literature, publishing work, PR, online and print media, library and archiving work, theatres and museums, art and culture management, research at universities and other institutions, international organisations, the advertising industry, translation, mediation and tourism.
Why Salzburg?
The MA course in Literary and Cultural Studies at the department of English and American Studies is distinguished by its outstanding student-to-staff ratio and offers excellent teaching (awarded with the Excellence in Teaching Award of the University of Salzburg) in the fields of literary studies, linguistics and language acquisition. Many of the department's lecturers are native speakers of English from the United States and Great Britain. We greatly emphasize the importance of combining current research with teaching and strive for practical relevance, e.g. by cooperating with cultural institutions (theatres, Salzburg Easter Festival, museums) in Salzburg, a city world-famous for its culture and history. Moreover, there are plenty of possibilities for students to study abroad, many offers promoting young talents already during their studies (scholarships and prizes) and a dedicated students' union. The MA degree in Literary and Cultural Studies connects directly to our BA and BEd courses and offers the possibility for a deeper, interdisciplinary study also in the fields of German, Romance and Slavonic Studies.
