Welcome to the Division of Political Science and Sociology

The Division of Political Science and Sociology consisting of the Department of Political Science and the Department of Sociology and Cultural Science is a central pillar of social science research and teaching at the University of Salzburg. Over the past several years, the division has undergone significant changes as a new generation of scholars has joined the two departments. As a result, the range of the academic program has widened and the profiles have sharpened. A sustained process of internationalization due to the recruitment of faculty from top institutions in Europe and North America and a clear focus on excellence in research have become distinctive characteristics. At the same time, the division has maintained its strengths and qualities for which it has always been known. This is its student-oriented focus with comparatively small class sizes, individual attention, and a personable atmosphere. In the context of redesigning the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in Political Science and Sociology, the curriculum has been updated and the number of courses offered in English has substantially increased.

Goals and Profile

The overriding goal is to offer excellence at the highest level in the areas of research, modern research methodology, instruction, and also service. As such, the quality of scholarship is of particular importance and attested by significant success in attracting national and international grants and a strong record of publications in ranked journals. The faculty is also committed to offering the students a superb academic environment that seeks to balance a focus on theory and methodology with professional and career-related training. The doctoral programs of both departments are known to be particularly selective. The departments of Political Science and Sociology function also as an important resource for the local and regional community. Faculty members frequently serve as experts with regional and national public institutions and media.

Both departments work in close partnership with the Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies (SCEUS) in which many of the division’s faculty members are active as researchers and teachers.
